Spain has been teasing the release of its digital nomad visa for months, but it’s now official, meaning remote workers from across the globe can apply to stay in the Mediterranean country.

Spain digital nomad visa

Originally mentioned in January 2022, the Spanish digital nomad visa was passed by parliament in November 2022 and approved by congress in December 2022.

While this is one of the most demanded visas in the European Union, the Spanish government has also set more limitations upon the pass than other nations.

Here’s the lowdown of what you’ll need in order to apply for the new Spanish digital nomad visa:

  • Your company must be more than 1 year old.
  • You must have worked at the above company for at least 3 months.
  • You must have written proof that you can do your job remotely.
  • You must hold a college diploma (or have been in the workforce for a minimum of 3 years.)
  • You must have health insurance.
  • Your criminal record must have been clear for at least 5 years.
  • Your income must be at least 2x that of the national average of Spanish citizens (US$1,355.)

This digital nomad visa is one of the most generous when it comes to length as it enables remote workers to work and live in Spain for up to 5 years.

Many Spanish cities are set up with co-working spaces, making it easy for remote workers to make new friends and adjust to their new country. These can be found in most major cities, including Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona.

Remote workers can also find established ex-pat communities in all major cities, with Valencia voted the number one city for foreign workers. You can find the perfect mix of Spanish charm and home comforts here.

Those who wish to step away from city life can head to the Costa del Sol where they’ll find a thriving British community.
