When you’re constantly on the go, traveling from one location to the next, it can prove difficult to stay healthy. And when we say healthy, we mean mentally as well as physically, even if you are living out your dream, traveling the world. Living out of a suitcase can be tough at times, which is why we’ve put together a list of ways to look after yourself whilst on the road.
All the Gear
When you go away, there is always a list of essential items you need, depending on where you are going and the activities you’ll be doing. For example, when traveling to hot countries you need to ensure you have the right sun protection, such as sunglasses and a hat so that you don’t end up with sunstroke or any other problems associated with overexposure to UV rays. Check out this infographic from All About Vision explaining how to take care of your eyes whilst on vacation.
Always make sure to plan for your trip well in advance so that you have all that you will need. Talk to other people who have done similar travel routes, read online forums, get in touch with travel agents, etc. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail as they say.
Mental Wellness
Although it’s not what everybody sees on social media, travel does have its ups and downs. Being away from home can be overwhelming when you’re constantly meeting new people, or even on the other end of the spectrum when you’re in an isolated area with nobody to interact with. Either way, it’s a good idea to have some practices in place to allow you to release some of your thoughts.
Consider journaling, as this is not only a cathartic exercise but it is a great way for you to jot down your travel memories. Or, plug in your headphones and listen to your favorite music. Go on a jog. Whatever relaxes you, try to take some time for it. Even if you’re traveling as part of a group, you need to prioritize yourself sometimes to keep you sane.
Diet
A lot of the time when you’re away, you’ll be eating out regularly. Due to this, you can find yourself opting for fast food as it’s often the cheapest, quickest option available. This can lead you to feel bogged down and sluggish if you do it enough. See if you can go for more nutritious options once in a while, and whilst you’re out, grab healthy snacks like fruit.
See if you can find accommodation where you can cook your own food once in a while, that way you have more control over what you’re consuming. Of course, it’s all about balance when it comes to this. Feel free to enjoy local cuisine and always ensure you have plentiful supplies of clean water, particularly in hot climates.
Final Thoughts
Travel is a wonderful thing that we are fortunate to be able to do so freely but it can be ruined if our health starts to suffer. Always put the needs of your body and mind first!
