Porto, also known as Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal. For a color seeker like me, it was love at first sight. With the old-ish vibes, the colorful scenes and Douro River in the background it was quite hard not to fall for Porto. Any Port wine addicts could easily get tempted by this unique and charming city.

In the past years, the tourism industry in Porto has boomed. Many travelers come to Portugal for a short period of time, and if that’s your case, Porto should be on your list! I’m actually quite surprised with how many people are skipping it.

The Best Views of Porto

The tiny cobblestoned streets will surely amuse you. Every corner is charming, especially when you walk next to the river. During the summertime, you can expect a busy atmosphere.

Eat outside on a terrace, grab lunch and set up your picnic in one of the several parks, or simply go shopping while admiring the famous colorful tiles and old trams.

If you’re happy to go a bit further I’d suggest two quieter spots:

Jardin do Palacio de Cristal & Miradouro das Virtudes

If you have money to spend then you could also enjoy the view at Torre dos Clérigos, which will give you of one the best views of Porto’s famous skyline. The entry costs EUR 4.

Going to the Beach in Porto

Beaches in Porto aren’t super far, but you’ll have to take public transportation to reach the beach. The best beach would probably be Praia de Matosinhos which takes around 20 minutes by metro.

What to Eat in Porto

Foodies; you might want to try “Francesinha”, which is super typical. Meat lovers will be in heaven with this mix of steak, ham, sausage, cheese, egg, bread and hot sauce.

Of course, Porto is next to the sea and it’s also a seafood and fish hub. You may be keen on trying Bacalhau (codfish), which is a must in Portuguese cuisine.

Explore Porto Surroundings: Douro Valley

If you can’t get enough of Douro River you should consider exploring Douro Valley, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Douro Valley must be on your Portugal itinerary whether you’re discovering the country by car or by public transportation. If you’re on a short trip you could also discover the area on a cruise departing from Porto.

I strongly suggest you hop on a train to reach Pinhao where you can also cruise on Douro Valley. It’s an amazing starting point! The area is truly breathtaking and you’re not going to be disappointed by the scenery.

I went on a cruise with Anima Durius (and I strongly recommend them for a unique experience around the Douro) and it was great. You won’t have to share the boat with many other people which is perfect if you’re traveling with a small group of people or with friends. Picture yourself on a yacht enjoying the best views out there. Can it get any better?

You could also visit a farm, learn more about the wine process making, and taste the famous Portuguese wine.

We had an excellent day on the river surrounded by vineyards. Our experience was unique and not touristy at all!
