I am exotic.  Well.  Not for my people. But… perhaps, I am exotic according to you.  English ladies and gentlemen, here’s why you should definitely date a non-native English speaker.

dating a foreigner

1. Our accent is cute. Lovely (and funny). And, believe me, this is the cutest thing you’ve ever heard.

Is there anything in the World that is sexier than an accent? … Seriously? I remember the first time I heard an Australian trying to speak in French. My heart melted. Everybody loves accents (and hidden efforts behind it!).

I still don’t know what’s cuter though. The accent itself or the little mistakes around it?

2. Our mistakes are hilarious. Enjoy a free one-man show.

Every day, we are creating new words, new ways of saying words and we are dealing with a lot of lapsus issues. Of course, it makes you laugh! We don’t always understand why you laugh, but we know for a fact that you could never be bored with us!

Back in Western Canada, I became a waitress.  Picture this: I’m serving a table of 9 and on the menu we have a sandwich called the big dipper. On the lunch menu, there is also the lil dip, which is the lunch portion of the big dipper.  One of them asks me what’s the difference between the lil dip and the big dip. While I try to repeat what he said, I make a massive mistake. Can you think of the lapsus I’ve made? #truestory

3. We think you are funny. (Or at least, you think that we think you are.)

Sometimes, you’ll speak very fast and we will be able to understand a word or two. If you smile, we will too.  If you laugh, we will laugh wondering what’s going on… but, we will laugh.

Sometimes, we are simply too tired and we don’t want to concentrate for a few minutes. Fact: our English brain needs a rest.

4. We will find a way to explain this very complicated word of yours.

There you go; you just said the most complicated word to pronounce for a non-native English speaker. Even if you do repeat it 100 times, we are not sure that we can handle it. Instead of saying it, we might prefer using other words to describe it and that’s totally fine for us.

Our tongue, our muscles and our throat are simply not ready for it.

5. You might not be able to learn our language, but there are big chances that we will teach you how to be naughty.

Because we speak your language, you might think you don’t need to learn ours. We secretly think you should because there are so many great words out there that you don’t even know about.

We do understand how hard it can be. It’s going to be our turn to enjoy your accent and your funny mistakes by teaching you how to be naughty.Who knows how to swear in another language? The sad truth: everybody wants to learn the basics, right?

6. No, we’re not angels and yes, we do want to fight sometimes… but, not in English.

Enjoy the peaceful version of us… until we are confident enough to argue in English. The angry version of ourselves feels helpless in the middle of an English fight. Stress and madness are killing any potential English brain effects.

If you wonder why we do speak in our language for a minute, be thankful that you can’t understand what we say.

7. Tea, beans on toasts and fish & chips? Where is real food?

We are going to share our food tastes with you. We are going to show you that French toast fit better with maple syrup than barbecue sauce. (Am I too Quebecker here?) Sure thing, you will discover that it’s not all about English stuff. Exotic people = exotic food, trust me, now we’re talking!

And if you are preparing a cup of tea for us, don’t even bother asking us if we want some sugar and milk.

8. We don’t mean to be rude. We’ve simply missed the English courtesy bits.

Most of us have learned English the hard way; putting ourselves surrounded by English people. We’ve probably missed the important bits at school, but you need to know that we are very polite in our language.

We don’t always think about your basics;

Our “can I have I cup of tea?” means “may I have I cup of tea please?”.

Our “where are my keys” means “Darling, have you seen my keys?”.

Our “Close the light” means “Darling, could you turn off the light for me please?”.

Perhaps, we shouldn’t have shortened your dear language, but we have and we will do… again and again.

9. If you do fall in love with one of us, keep in mind that we love you enough (we are crazy enough) to give up a part of our life.

Would you do the same for us? Perhaps, you won’t have to do it as we’ve already done it for you.

Be grateful. And remember that every day we are pushing ourselves to be with you.

And Darling, please, be ready. Be ready for the best adventure of your life. Dating a foreigner is simply amazing.
