There is a lot to be said for a beach break, they offer the chance for relaxation, a way to unwind and forget about your everyday stresses. However, sometimes you want to do something different and experience something new. With all the benefits a beach break offers, there are alternative holiday ideas that you can do that offer the same benefits and more.

If you enjoy being on the water, a cruise may appeal. If you enjoy being active, a hiking holiday might be up your street. Alternatively, a city break exploring the history of a country like Rome is worth consideration – it’s all down to your own preference and deciding what you will enjoy the most. The people you are going away with will also have an impact on the type of holiday you choose.

When you look into alternative holiday breaks, you’ll be amazed at just how many alternatives there are out there. Below we have put together our guide on three options.

Hiking Holiday

Are you someone who likes to get active? Hiking holidays give you the chance to do just that, whilst also seeing many incredible destinations – often you’ll see places that you can only get to when hiking, showing you unique landscapes! A hiking holiday can be over several days, to seven nights or even two weeks – this is a Camino de Santiago from Sarria where you travel 111km in 7 days. Depending on your fitness levels and experience in hiking, you can choose different routes which are for different levels of ability.

Cruise Holiday

Cruise holidays have been growing in popularity over the years. They offer a way to see multiple destinations on one holiday, whilst travelling in luxury. A lot of cruise lines have been investing in their ships heavily, launching new boats that feature everything from award-winning restaurants to high-end entertainment venues and exciting cocktail bars – some will let you make your own cocktails onboard or offer lessons on cocktails, such as the best gin mixers or easiest cocktails to make at home. Often ships will feature a spa, swimming pools, theatre, casino on board and more. Depending on your budget for your breakaway, will decide on the cruise company you can go with, but just like any beach break, there are options for all budgets.

City Break

There are so many cities in the world for you to see (around 10,000 cities). Each city is unique, offering a whole new experience from another. For example, London and Brighton – both are in England but are very different. London is the capital, very busy whereas Brighton is on the coast, offering gorgeous coastal views and walks. If you are after an alternative to a beach break, a city break could be just the thing for you. You could always try and combine a city break with a beach break or choose a city that also has a lovely beach for you to relax on – Barcelona is a great example of this and it’s very affordable.

Where are you planning on going for your next holiday? Will you be going on a cruise? A hiking holiday or a city break? Is there any holiday alternative to a beach break that you think we should add to our above guide? Let us know in the comment box below.
