After originally teasing its arrival in 2021, the digital nomad visa for Montenegro has been a long time coming but has finally been officially announced.
The small yet charming country sits in the Balkans, surrounded by Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania.
It has the perfect combination of sunny seaside destinations, dramatic national parks filled with towering conifers, and bustling cities that are full of life.
Montenegro’s digital nomad visa was due to be released in early 2022, however, for one reason or another, the introduction of the visa has been delayed until now.
So, how long can you stay there? The country is introducing one of the best visas in Europe that allows digital nomads and remote workers to stay in the country for two years. On top of that, it’s extendable for another two years without needing to leave the country.
If you thought it couldn’t get any better, nomads are exempt from paying any income tax while living in Montenegro.
The initiative was announced by Jan de Jong who is the president of the Digital Nomad Association in Croatia. He was the main instigator in Croatia’s creation of a dedicated visa for digital nomads and has worked his magic once again on the government of Montenegro.
It’s not possible to apply for the visa yet. However, it’s looking likely to be available by the end of 2022, so watch this space.
The country is relatively new, having only been declared independent from Serbia in 2006. Because of this, it often lies under the radar, meaning that tourism is lower than in other Adriatic destinations, such as Croatia.
However, it is an ideal location to base yourself in, because of its affordability and gorgeous climate.
As a remote worker, you may wish to consider the capital, Podgorica, for your new home. While the nomadic community is smaller than in other, more developed countries, you’ll still find several coworking spaces and nomad hotspots.
Alternatively, choose the beach town of Kotor, which is known for its medieval Old Town and its panoramic views across the Adriatic Sea.
