When traveling to Darwin there are a few things to keep in mind when you are packing. It is known to be warm, with plenty of bugs and rain, but also offers spectacular views and things to do.

From temperature to activities and from accessories to necessities we will go through some key tips on how to pack appropriately.

Darwin

The Weather

Remember, Darwin is hot! It is crucial to protect yourself from the sun, so sun cream is an absolute must-pack! Think also about protecting as much skin as you can, so a long-sleeved shirt or light jacket, a hat, and sunglasses are all recommended when you go to Darwin. Sunburn is no fun!

While it is generally warm throughout the year Darwin does have a rainy season, so make sure if you are going between October and April that you have more than sunglasses in your bag. It is a good idea to bring a poncho, boots, an umbrella, and other gear like a raincoat if you will be heading out in the rain, but be aware it will still be humid, so you will still be warm. You may need to change your clothes during the day so bring plenty of t-shirts and be prepared.

Activities

Depending on what you are planning to do when you arrive, you may need to pack accordingly. Darwin boasts one of the most famous and well-known racecourses in Australia, Flemington Racecourse, and if you attended Darwin races today you would not be able to get in in certain outfits or styles. Most racecourses don’t allow thongs or bare midriffs, anything that is not in keeping with the dignity and style of the course, so if you are planning on any specific activities it is a good idea to check the dress code and make sure you bring what you need.

A swimsuit is usually a must bring too when visiting Darwin, whether you want to swim with the crocodiles (rather you than me) or hit up a waterfall or water park with a light cover-up ready to put on when needed again to protect from that hot sun.

Darwin

Equipment

Many people visiting Darwin enjoy the amazing hiking on offer, but again making sure you have all the equipment you need is essential. A good pair of fitting hiking boots is key, as is anything you may need for camping, eating, or climbing. It’s up to you to decide what kind of trip you want, but no matter what, ensure you have plenty of bug spray. The warm temperature means there are lots of mosquitos to keep you company, you have been warned!

With a year-long summer and a long rainy season, it is important to pack sensibly for your trip to Darwin, bringing both sunscreen and an umbrella, bug spray, and a poncho. Make sure you also pack for any events or activities that you may wish to go to and that you have the appropriate footwear: thongs, rain boots, hiking boots, or even dress shoes. Take your time, check your list twice, and have a good trip.
